Vocal lessons, and special projects. Over each of the 11 years that I have

Dear FCA Parents and Students,
Here at FCA, we are privileged to have many resources which prepare your
children with many life skills involving music. Our curriculum has been
designed to be consistent with New York standards, which include a hand's-on
understanding of music literacy, and harmony, vocal and instrumental, along
with many applications and opportunities. Even more, our curriculum is
designed to reflect Jesus Himself through God's Word, encouragement in
worship, and ministry opportunities. And prayer is a key part of all we do.
God is so GOOD! He provides for our every need and wants to bless His people.
Music is particularly valuable in a child's growth experiences because, in
addition to being a key element in worship, developing music skill enhances
both left brain and right brain development. Music training before puberty is
especially linked to mathematical and reasoning skills and even SAT scores at
the high school level, as well as leadership and interactive skills,
self-control, self motivation, self worth, and a sense of mission and service.
Here we read, write, listen to, compose, write, reflect, compare, and
experiment, sing and play instruments involving many aspects of music.
Each year we have many children who excel as NYSSMA soloists and who earn top
placements in select county choruses, bands, and other select ensembles. We
provide supplementary concerts and instrumental experiences for your child as
well as classroom and individual learning opportunities. We have an FCA band
and also feature many students in our concerts and annual Christmas Program.
Ensembles are encouraged, and these types of groups build coordination,
comraderie, teamwork and many valuable people skills.
Over the years at FCA your child will progressively learn to read and play
music, with basic harmony theory and vocal and breathing skills, that will
well prepare him or her for top high school music programs, and courses, as
well as music appreciation in areas from hymns to classics, in various styles.
Your child will become familiar with instruments and key composers and
musicians from many key eras in music development and will work on building
blocks for discernment in music listening and applied music experiences. I
pray that your child will be richly blessed through these opportunities and
use their growing knowledge as they in turn minister using their various gifts
and talents. To His glory!
Respectfully Yours and joyfully In the service of the Lord Jesus,
Mrs. Antoinette Turner
FCA MUSIC CLASS Grades 1-6 with Mrs T: Expectations:
In all grades, participation, and behavior are a key part of the music grade.
Students are expected to be respectful (raise hands, talk in turn, cooperate,
bring supplies, try their best, so their homework, treat others kindly and to
participate to their best ability and to the glory of God. Attendance at
School Concerts and Programs and graduation is required, and is part of the
grade. Our Christmas Program is Sunday, Dec 4th, and includes all our
students. There will be an after school practice for children who wish to act
in the play and qualify in auditions.
A) Music grades 1-2 in general will not require any special tools from home.
They will learn and reinforce respectful behavior and cooperation skills and
have fun with each other with vocal singing, movement, and breathing
techniques, and will learn to recognize, repeat, and sight- read rhythms and
solfege, and to play rhythmic patterns together and in harmony.
B) Children in Grades 3 and up will be expected to have with them each Monday:
Their M ( manuscript) book ( covered and saved year to year) and 2 sharpened
pencils, (no pens), a good eraser, and a white board marker. They will
occasionally have homework. Please check for this. They will learn many
writing skills and spacial skills involving music, and will reinforce their
ability to read and form music sentences and phrases. They will learn to
recognize and use various meters and develop music appreciation skills.
C) Children in Grades 4 -6 will develop a solid ability to play the soprano
recorder. In addition to the above mentioned * they will be expected to
practice their recorder several nights a week as homework, and must have their
recorder and R book at school every Monday and for concerts. The recorder is
a key component in teaching them many aspects of music theory and performance.
Failure to bring recorder will result in the student writing you a note,
requiring signature, and repeated missing recorder or book will lower their
grade. In school they will also sight sing, and may play supplementary
instruments. Children in Grades 3 and 5 have special emphasis on instruments.
Children in grade 5 will also develop listening skills and composition skills.
Grades 5- 6 will typically have a weekly homework assignment due on Mondays
along with recorder practice required and will have several tests and quizzes
over the year.
In my website, you may find key projects and tests listed.
If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 462-0818 or leave me
a school message at 462-0266 with your phone number and the best time and way
to reach you.
FCA With Joy Music Lessons and Special Opportunities
"Whatever your hands choose to do, do with all your might!"
"The Lord is My Strength and My Song" Isaiah 12
We currently offer private 35 minute lessons during school hours for students
in grades 3 thru 8 in piano, flute, guitar, clarinet, trumpet, tenor or alto
saxophone, vocal solfege /piano, violin, cello, viola, string bass, drums.
Prayer is a vital part of each lesson experience. Material will likely
include training, finger practice exercises, an assignment and detail
notebook, a carry bag, a pencil ( and a metronome after about 3 months) Mrs.
T will provide you any needed materials at her cost (teacher discounted).
See Mrs. T if you have interest in a specific instrument not listed above.
Lessons Schedule: FCA Lessons Students are scheduled on a first pay / first
serve basis for sign ups and lesson space is limited by the hours in the
school day. A lessons schedule is posted in the school office and in Mrs
T.'s office. Students must own or rent their own instrument and with the
exception of the piano , must bring it, with a notebook and their lesson books
and papers in a satchel weekly on their assigned lesson day. Failure to bring
their instrument or lesson supplies does not dismiss them from their lesson.
The teacher will be there for the student and his or her lesson. Whenever
possible we will rotate students in a given class to balance schedules.
FCA Music Lessons with Mrs T begin this week according to the lessons
schedule. Tuition for 32 lessons is $425 per child per year, a real bargain
provided at a special reduced rate for FCA students. See Mrs. T for specifics
on payment schedules and pre payment bonuses. Lessons students are expected
to practice 6 days a week for at least 20 minutes typically and to come to
weekly lessons on schedule unless they are not in school.
Mrs. T will do all she can to make up any lessons missed due to illness.
Scheduled days without school and practice days for other programs are
factored into the schedule.
Instrumental students and vocal students are encouraged to participate in
NYSSMA and to apply for All County Ensembles whenever possible. These
opportunities are earned privileges that allow more challenge, and in some
cases increased possibility of recognition and scholarships in High School ,
especially if begun by Jr High age.
NYSSMA, a New York State School Music Association Solofest, held in the
spring, serves as a standard for excellence in performance and also an
audition (by trained adjudicators ) for All County. Students prepare for
NYSSMA from January to the March or April festival, preparing a solo from the
manual and the required number of scales and or rudiments. They also build up
their sight reading expertise.
If chosen for All County, selected top students from all of Dutchess County
prepare ahead with Mrs. T, and on a specific weekend, work together to
perform in a concert with top conductors, and make a cd/dvd, in a wonderful
educational experience they will always remember. We have had outstanding
students participate in NYSSMA and All County from FCA for the past 7 years,
in voice, flute, piano, trumpet, drums, guitar, clarinet, violin, string bass.
Praise the Lord!
Love,
Mrs Turner
